Saying NO to medical school

Daily writing prompt
Describe a decision you made in the past that helped you learn or grow.

All through college I was set on medical school, but actually did not have the drive or the grades per say. My senior year I applied, sent my documents and essay – and got accepted! My acceptance was contingent on my MCAT scores…I had not taken the MCAT. On the eve of the MCAT test (which I had prepared for!), my aunt and uncle who had raised me got into a big fight, it got ugly, plants were thrown across the room, cheating gossip was not verified…these people were my life, they raised me, believed in me, ugh. I did not sleep all night. In the morning, I found out my uncle had moved out. My aunt was in despair, she needed me. How could I leave her in such a vulnerable estate? So, I made the decision, that I was not going to sit for the MCAT that day, because being with my aunt was so much more important.

I ended up not going to medical school, I never re-registered for the MCAT. I am okay with my decision, why? Family over everything! Your people are your village – sometimes we forget. Over the years I have become successful otherwise without being a medical doctor, and my family, those who stood by me in my tough years of youth, they got me, and I got them. Careers matter, but people matter more.
